Social platforms re-encode whatever you upload down to around 1080 pixels. Resizing to it first means your encoder makes that pass, not theirs.

Sized for social platforms
1080 pixels is what the major social networks settle on internally. Whatever you upload, they re-encode it to around this size, so sending a 4000 px original leaves the choice of encoder to them.
Resizing to 1080 before uploading puts that step under your control, and usually gives a cleaner result than the platform's own pass over a much larger file.
What happens to the aspect ratio
Setting 1080 here means the longest side becomes 1080 and the other stays proportional. A portrait photo stays portrait; nothing is cropped into a square. If a platform wants a specific ratio, crop it in an editor first. This tool does not crop, because the choice of what to leave out is yours.
