It is the right choice for blog headers, hero images, wallpapers and anything a visitor might open full screen. For images that sit inside a column of text, 1280 is usually plenty.
Cap the weight as well
A 1920 px photograph straight out of a camera can still weigh several megabytes, which will hurt your page speed even though the dimensions are right. Set a file-size ceiling in the second row (500 KB is a good target at this width) and the tool compresses down to it after resizing.
