Target 500 KB
Compress an image to 500 KB
At 500 KB a full-width photograph stays sharp on a high-density screen, and the tool almost never has to remove pixels to get there.

A comfortable ceiling
Half a megabyte suits web publishing. A page stays fast on a phone connection, and a full-width photograph still looks sharp on a high-density screen.
Most content management systems, forum uploaders and newsletter tools settle on this figure for the same reason. At 500 KB the tool rarely needs to remove pixels; it spends invisible JPEG quality instead.
Pair it with a pixel limit
For anything going on a web page, capping dimensions matters as much as capping bytes. A 4000 px photo displayed 800 px wide costs the visitor bandwidth and costs you page speed, however well it is compressed.
Set the pixel box to 1920 for a full-width header or 1280 for an in-article image, keep 500 KB as the ceiling, and you get a file that is right on both axes.
