50 KB is a hard target
Fifty kilobytes is about as small as a usable photograph gets. It appears on older bulletin boards, forum signatures, e-ticket attachments, and government examination portals that have not raised their quota since the dial-up era.
Quality alone will not reach this size on a full-resolution photo. The tool lowers JPEG quality first, and when that is exhausted it removes pixels, which is the only way a 4000 px camera file reaches 50 KB. Expect a visibly softer image and check it before you submit.
Getting a usable result
Two things help at this target:
- Crop before you compress. Half the pixels means roughly half the bytes to spend. If only the face or the document matters, crop to it first in your phone's photo app, then come back here.
- Prefer flat subjects. A scanned form or an ID photo compresses far better than a busy landscape, because JPEG spends its budget on fine detail and noise.
If the result is refused as unreadable, try 100 KB. Most portals that say 50 KB accept a little more in practice.
