The application-form size
One megabyte is the usual allowance for a document uploaded to a university application, an insurance claim or a job portal. It is roughly what a modern phone photo weighs after ordinary compression, which is why so many forms settle there.
At this target a full-resolution photograph normally keeps every pixel. The file gets there on JPEG quality alone, typically in the seventies, where the difference does not show on any screen.
Multiple pages, multiple files
Forms that accept 1 MB usually accept several files. Drop them all at once here: each is processed independently against the same limit, and the download-all button hands them back in one go.
Give the files meaningful names before you drop them. The output keeps the name with a -resized suffix, which makes the upload step less error-prone when you have six documents to attach.
If the form is stricter than it claimed, 500 KB is the usual fallback.
